System Hardware Networking Engineer
A network engineer is an IT expert working in computer networking. They are usually a member of the organisation's IT department and ensure its network systems run efficiently. Employers expect them to oversee various networks, including the company's intranet, extranet, and phone system. They evaluate the performance of each, diagnose potential networking issues, and make repairs.
Network engineers specialise in network administration and systems, where they work with various IT personnel to complete a range of tasks such as:
- Designing and implementing new solutions and testing the resilience of the existing network environment
- Maintaining and administering computer networks, including hardware, software applications, and configurations
- Troubleshooting, diagnosing, and finding solutions to potential network and system issues
- Conducting regular maintenance tasks, such as managing security configurations, installing software patches, and performing network upgrades
- Updating existing network equipment and advising on the purchase of new systems
Duties & Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
- Network Setup and Maintenance: Configure, install, and maintain LAN, WAN, Wi-Fi, and other network devices such as routers, switches, firewalls, and load balancers.
- System Hardware Management: Assemble, test, and troubleshoot hardware components including servers, computers, and peripherals, ensuring system functionality and efficiency.
- Network Security: Monitor network security, manage firewalls, and implement security policies to protect against unauthorized access, malware, and data breaches.
- System Monitoring and Troubleshooting: Conduct regular monitoring and performance testing of network and hardware systems; troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and network issues promptly.
- Software Installation and Configuration: Install, configure, and update operating systems, software applications, and patches on servers and workstations.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate documentation for network configurations, system updates, and support requests. Prepare reports on system performance, incidents, and resolutions.
- Technical Support: Provide Level 2/3 support to address hardware and network issues, ensuring high availability and performance of critical business systems.
- Research and Development: Stay updated with new hardware, networking technologies, and best practices to make recommendations for upgrades and improvements.
Job Requirements
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Educational Qualification: - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. Relevant certifications (e.g., CCNA, CompTIA Network+) are a plus.
- Strong financial analysis skills, along with excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
Experience: - 2-5 years of experience in hardware, networking, or related IT support roles.
Technical Skills: - Strong knowledge of networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP) and services.
- Hands-on experience with routers, switches, and firewalls.
- Proficiency in operating systems (Windows, Linux) and virtualization platforms.
- Familiarity with network security protocols and tools (VPN, antivirus software, firewalls).
- Understanding of cloud services and platforms (AWS, Azure) is advantageous.
Soft Skills: - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication skills to work with cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications: - Certification in Networking and/or Security (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Security+).
- Experience with system automation, scripting, or other programming skills.
- Knowledge of ITIL practices for incident and problem management.
Work Environment: - This role may require periodic on-site work and off-hours support in case of system emergencies.
